Situated on the R72 midway between Port Elizabeth and East London, Port Alfred, is the ideal base from which to explore South Africa's magnificent sunshine coast or to make excursions into the historically enriched Frontier country of the interior.

The hosts will ensure that all your needs and comforts are met. The Guest House is very close to the town and all amenities and there are many good restaurants in the vicinity. Port Alfred's pristine beaches are only 3 minutes away.

With seven spacious accommodation units, all equipped with fitted kitchenettes and BBQ/braai facilities, The Guest House ensures that you have a home away from home experience in the heart of Port Alfred.

The seven self contained units are all comfortably furnished, well appointed, have their own separate entrances and boast magnificent views. They are fully equipped with most of the modern conveniences and the well fitted kitchenettes are a real treat. All are serviced daily unless otherwise requested(dish washing excluded- this can be arranged for a small charge). Secure off-street parking is available and BBQ/braai facilities are provided. The deck and splash pool ( Units 1, 2 and 3) is the ideal place for sun lovers to relax or to enjoy a refreshing drink after a long day. The House next Door as we fondly call it, has its own larger pool, with sitting and tanning areas.The Guest House is THE place to stay in Port Alfred.

The Kowie History Museum

The Kowie History Museum is focused on displaying the social history of the historic Albany District and the activities of the early settlers between 1820 and 1889. There is an old card index with the names of the 4,000 British settlers and immediate descendants who landed in the area in the 1800s. The mysterious story of Briseis is also on exhibit. Briseis ran aground on a reef while returning from India in 1859, and has now become a popular ship-wreck site for divers. The town is well known for its large variety of shells all along the shore and there is a fascinating collection of sea shells from the Port Alfred area on display. The museum is housed in Port Alfred's old railway station and is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 1pm.

Whale Watching

Between July and December of every year, the Eastern Cape coastline is frequented by Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales. These animals glide past the shore; breaching, lobtailing and spy-hopping as onlookers appreciate their antics from the beach. The warm waters and extensive coastline of the Eastern Cape make this a fabulous whale-watching destination.

Royal Port Alfred Golf Club

Established in 1907, the historic Royal Port Alfred Golf Club is situated on the Sunshine Coast in Port Alfred, half way between East London and Port Elizabeth. This charming and old-fashioned course has some quirky holes and pretty much preserves the atmosphere of the early 1900s in South Africa.

One of the true links courses in South Africa, it is set on the rolling hills of Port Alfred, with plenty of indigenous bush, wildlife and wonderful sea views. The 18-hole course is 5 800 m and has a unique layout, which, in true links tradition, tests your ability to read the elements as much as the course. A golfing experience not to be missed!

Kelly's Beach

Kelly's Beach on the Sunshine Coast is one of South Africa's prestigious international Blue Flag beaches. The sandy beach is situated near the Kowie River estuary mouth and is well worth a visit. Two viewing decks offer fantastic viewpoints to watch whales, beach goers, and stunning sunsets. It’s a great swimming beach and offers 5-star facilities. Interpretive boards provide interesting information about some of the unique characteristics of this wonderful beach. The Blue Flag Beach award assures cleanliness, safety, amenities and the upkeep of environmental standards.

The Big Pineapple (11 km from Port Alfred)

The little hamlet of Bathurst lays claims to the biggest pineapple on the planet! Standing 16.7 metres tall, this gigantic structure is not a cell phone tower in disguise; but rather a tribute to the agricultural success of the prickly fruit. Summerhill Farm, Kowie Road, Bathurst.

Early farmers struggled to grow any crops here until the first pineapple top was planted in 1865. The interior boasts a tourist shop, static displays, and a great view. It’s a fun place to take the whole family and learn about the pineapple industry or find a little memento. Head to the historic Pig and Whistle afterwards, the oldest licenced Inn in South Africa.

Makhanda, formerly known as Grahamstown, is a town of about 140,000 people in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is situated about 110 kilometres (70 mi) northeast of Gqeberha and 130 kilometres (80 mi) southwest of East London. It is the largest town in the Makana Local Municipality, and the seat of the municipal council. It also hosts Rhodes University, the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court, the South African Library for the Blind (SALB), a diocese of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, and 6 South African Infantry Battalion. Furthermore, located approximately 3 km south-east of the town lies the world renowned Waterloo Farm, the only estuarine fossil site in the world from 360 million years ago with exceptional soft-tissue preservation.

The town's name-change from Grahamstown to Makhanda was officially gazetted on 29 June 2018. The town was officially renamed to Makhanda in memory of Xhosa warrior and prophet Makhanda ka Nxele.

History 

Founding

Makhanda was founded as Grahamstown in 1812 after the Fourth Xhosa War as a military outpost by Lieutenant-Colonel John Graham as part of a campaign to secure the Eastern frontier of the Cape Colony. Initially Colonel Graham decided to establish his headquarters on the loan farm Noutoe, now known as Table Farm, but at the recommendation of Ensign Andries Stockenstrom it was moved to the homestead of the loan farm De Rietfontein, belonging to Lucas Meyer. Construction on the new headquarters, located on the site of the present Church Square, thus began in June 1812.

As part of the campaign, Graham was ordered to clear 20,000 Xhosa living in the region led by Ndlambe ka Rharhabe from the Zuurveld. During the campaign, which formed part of the Xhosa Wars, Graham ordered the adoption of numerous scorched earth tactics, which included the burnings of Xhosa farms. By 1812, Graham had completed his assignment, and transformed Grahamstown into the central military outpost in the region.

In 1904, Rhodes University College was established in Grahamstown through a grant from the Rhodes Trust. In 1951 it became a fully-fledged University, Rhodes University.

Education, arts and culture

The town is home to Rhodes University, the South African National Library for the Blind, the National English Literary Museum, the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (formerly the JLB Smith Institute), the International Library of African Music (ILAM), the Albany Museum, and the Institute for the Study of English in Africa. A number of palaeontological discoveries made from Waterloo Farm in the past two decades have sparked a global interest in the fossils of the Eastern Cape Province and this has resulted in numerous international collaborations. These discoveries and collaborations have been made possible by the persistent work of Robert W. Gess of the Devonian Ecosystem Laboratory, Albany Museum, who has dedicated most of his life excavating and studying blocks of black shale that he, with later support from the South African Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) has rescued from road cuttings from back in the mid- 1980s.

The legacy of disparate education during Apartheid still echoes in the provision of secondary education in this former frontier town, where significant discrepancies in matric pass rates and general quality of education exist. Addressing this problem is one of the town's greatest challenges

Sibuya, one of South Africa’s most unique Safari destinations, has more navigable river than any other game reserve in South Africa. Consequently, as a birding destination it is hard to beat as there are nearly 400 different species. This breathtakingly beautiful game reserve is sanctuary to an abundance of diverse wildlife from elephants to otters, and almost everything in between, including the Big Five. Sibuya offers accommodation in two private and exclusive luxury tented game lodges and prides itself on superb cuisine. Sibuya’s reception is in the holiday village of Kenton-on-Sea in the Eastern Cape Province, about 140kms (80 miles) equidistant from Gqeberha and East London. A natural extension to any trip, from Cape Town up the Garden Route, and easily accessible from Gqeberha which is a short flip from the major cities of Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.

Charter flights to Port Alfred are less than a 20min transfer to the game park. The unique experience starts immediately with a half-hour boat transfer up the Kariega estuary to River Camp or Forest Camp. Leaving the beach, turtles, dolphins and whales might be seen near the river mouth. Both camps nestle in riverine forest and have been constructed in an environmentally conscious manner. Guests are hosted and guided by a team of experienced professionals.

Amakhala Game Reserve is located in the malaria-free Eastern Cape of South Africa. The Game Reserve offers a wide variety of  3, 4 & 5-star owner-managed experiences and Safari Lodges.

Amakhala Game Reserve boasts 18,000 acres of Big 5 territory and you are highly likely to have excellent sightings of Rhino, Lion, Buffalo and Elephant, while the more elusive animals encountered could include the bat-eared fox, hyena or even a leopard.

When I have gone away and stayed at a hotel or a B&B, I always refer to my place of stay as, "my room". Upon staying at the Guest House, I realised that "my room" is not appropriate. Instead, I had to refer to it as "home." The rooms are cozy and extremely comforting. The staff reinforces that sense of homeliness and they exude politeness. The breakfasts are amazing and the service all round was impeccable. I look forward to traveling to Port Alfred. My drive may be long, but I will always have a place to call home.

A Lovely Christmas Stay

We met up with our family the Guest House for Christmas in PA and had a most wonderful time. We made use of the bar and entertainment area for Christmas lunch and enjoyed the pool, the good weather and beautiful sea views. There was plenty of space to gather round and open presents and the well-stocked kitchens ensured we had everything we needed to make a big family meal. The comfy bed and the delicious breakfast provided by guesthouse was the cherry on top of our relaxing stay! My girlfriend and I have stayed at the Guest House many times and we have never once had anything short of an amazing time. The owners are an incredible hosts - always very kind and generous. The staff are very friendly, and the dogs (three schnauzers) are adorable. Amazing, Family-friendly stay!

My family and I stayed at The Lookout over the December period. We had an amazing time! The rooms really feel like a home-away-from-home, with their warm and inviting decor and little extra touches. The food was amazing, and the little ones were endlessly entertained at the pool, while the adults enjoyed a drink at the little braai and bar on site. We were blown away by how lovely our apartment was and the view was incredible. Very well equipped, super comfortable and great value for money! We all loved having a dip in the pool!! Port Alfred is a small town with a population of just under 26,000 in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is situated on the eastern seaboard of the country at the mouth of the Kowie River, almost exactly halfway between the larger cities of Gqeberha and East London and 30 kilometres (19 mi) west of Cannon Rocks.

History

Port Alfred was established in the early 1820s by British settlers who were moved into the area by Lord Charles Somerset as there was conflict between the Cape Colony and the Xhosa people. Originally, it was two separate towns (settlers arriving on the west bank in 1820 named their settlement Port Kowie, and those arriving on the east bank named theirs Port Frances).

In 1860, when Queen Victoria's son Prince Alfred visited, the name was changed in his honour.

Port

In 1839, William Cock and George Hodgkinson started to block the natural river mouth to the east and canalise the present opening to the sea. By 1841 South Africa's first man-made harbour was opened after completion of the stone-lined channel between the ocean and the Kowie river. This allowed high-masted sailing ships with their heavy cargo to dock at the wharf.

Transport

Port Alfred is located on the junction of the R67 and R72 roads. The R67 connects Port Alfred with the N2 at Makhanda to the north, while the R72 joins the N2 near Colchester to the west and follows the coast to East London in the east.
