History of our Mansion

In 1864, the family of Senator AB Foster had this house built, the plans of which were drawn up by the famous architect Sir John William Hopkins. We find there all the specificities of the French private mansion including the entrance gate, the library, the chapel, the spacious living room, the stable with the porte-cochère, the large courtyard, the gardens and the gazebo which overlooks the property.

A large residence to receive the best of the times and feel like staying at a hotel.

The wealthy businessman and senator, Asa Belknap Foster, was born in the United States in 1817. He was the son of Dr. Stephen Sewell Foster and Mrs. Sally Belknap. They settled in Frost Village with their four children in 1822.

After a stay of nearly 15 years in the United States, where he worked with his uncle, AB Foster returned to Quebec at the age of 35, where he then undertook the development and construction of several road networks and the railway connecting the northern United States to several cities in Quebec.

Between 1852 and 1872, he will invest in several companies, be administrator, director of banks and large companies. He will build, at his own expense, a station and mechanical workshops in the city of Waterloo, thus wishing to make it the hub of the Quebec rail network.

In 1860, he acquired all of the southern parts of the village of Waterloo and established a series of motorable roads there, including rue Foster, a park, an imposing hotel and several brick houses.

During this same period, he undertook the construction of an important sawmill, he financed various religious communities for the planting of churches and offered competitive prices for land to anyone wishing to build a house there, a business or a store.

Between 1857 and 1875, the city will have grown from 200 to 2,000 inhabitants.

His involvement in the development of the greater Waterloo area, combined with the prestige of the positions he held in business and in the high spheres of politics, quickly contributed to making AB Foster the most public figure. in view of the region. He will then be nicknamed "The King of the Railways of Canada".

As he reached new heights of unparalleled popularity in the mid-1860s, he set out to build an imposing and luxurious residence atop a hill covered with maple trees, overlooking the built environment of Waterloo.

Construction work on the residence and its outbuildings began in 1864 and ended in the fall of 1865.

For the occasion, Senator Foster will retain the services of John William Hopkins, one of the most prominent architects in the Montreal business community.

Asa Belknap Foster died prematurely on November 1, 1877.

Following numerous financial reversals, the majestic residence of Waterloo will be sold for a symbolic sum to the Religious Congregation of the Saints-Names-of-Jesus-and-Mary in 1882.

Until 1961, the Maplewood Convent provided its rigorous teaching to young girls from neighboring regions as well as to those from middle-class families established in the United States.

Following the school reform of 1960, the convent will have to cease its activities in connection with education and will become a resort, retirement and convalescence place for the nuns of the Congregation.

In 1989, the decrease in the religious population led the Congregation to abandon the old Maplewood Convent.

The influence of Sister-Louis-De-Sainte-Marie (Mariette Dubreuil) will remain anchored in the memory of many who have frequented the Convent. She devoted her entire career to teaching painting and passed away in 2010, at the age of 101.

Between 1989 and 2012, two owners succeeded one another and the Manor was abandoned and the premises deteriorated considerably until the current occupants acquired it in July 2012.

After more than two years of work and restoration, which were carried out with love and passion, in order to breathe new life into this jewel of heritage and to allow the enhancement of the places and the history of those who occupied it, it is with great pleasure that the doors of this magnificent residence open.
