Accommodation

Room 4 sunset

The gardens are a heaven for local wildlife, especially birds. Sitting on your balcony or outside your tent you can spot many varieties of sunbird, kingfishers and, if you are lucky, bushbabies in the evening. There is a family of otters living on the lake shore that can be seen at dawn and dusk.

All along the shore we have little beaches and chill out spots where you can relax in a hammock or to sun bathe on the loungers. We have beautiful outdoor hot showers where you can bath in the sun or under the stars with a great view of the lake. To protect the environment we use compost toilets which are really easy and pleasant to use.

Activities

We are so fortunate that the waters of Lake Malawi are so clear. In the Northern region you will find the deepest part of the lake, 750 meters, which is only 5 kilometers from Nkhata Bay. This means that the waters will always be clean no matter what season it is. The lake varies in temperature only a little through out the year with the warmest being 26 degrees and coolest 21, so what ever the season it is always pleasant to swim.

Free Snorkeling Equipment

All along the shore, right in front of our Lodge, you will see a huge variety of colorful tropical fish. Lake Malawi is famous for its Cichlid fish, which are very popular for aquariums and with biologists. Cichlids are the fastest evolving fish in the world, which means that the lake has more than 1500 different species, all different in color, pattern and behavior. There is even one fish that only swims upside down to feed on the bottom of rocks. Cichlids are also interesting because the mothers care for their young by keeping them in their mouth when threatened, a really fun thing to see when snorkeling, if you are lucky.

We have plenty of snorkels and masks for you to borrow and can direct you to good sites and tunnels to swim through if you’re brave enough.

Twice a week we offer a free guided snorkelling safari where you get paddle by canoe to some of the best dive sites in Malawi.

Free kayaks, dugout canoes and stand-kup paddle boards

We have traditional dug out canoes you can have fun trying to master and if you want to tour the area easily we have double and single kayaks which are easy to handle. The stand up paddle boards are ideal for messing around. If you have more experience they are a great way to get some exercise while enjoying being out on the water.

We have two touring canoes available for exploring, day trips and overnight trips and have snorkelling safaris going out twice a week. We are also have a collection of stand-up paddle boards for our guests to enjoy seeing Lake Malawi from a different perspective.

Bar and Restaurant

Bar:restaurant

The center of all communal activity at our Lodge is our bar and restaurant area. Open and shady, it provides a cool place to relax on the big comfy sofa during the day and a lively place to have a few drinks, chat to other travelers after dinner.

  • Live music every week.
  • WI-FI hotspot.
  • Book exchange/library.
  • Board games.
  • Homemade iced teas/lemonades/smoothies.
  • The best ever homemade ice cream, waffles and chocolate brownies.
  • Very cold beers.
  • Cocktails.
  • Friendly and relaxed vibe.
  • Free tea at 4.00pm every day.

The Views of the lake from our decks are stunning, especially during the rainy season when you get the best views of the lightning.

The communal area provides a focus for socialising, having a chat with our friendly staff, playing some games with friends or getting the latest information from the travelers grapevine!

We like to encourage local talent and support cultural activities, so you will find local musicians and bands performing in the evenings at least twice a week, and on the last Friday of every month we have a special event to support a Malawian cultural activity such as a local school drama group or a traditional dancing display.

We cook all the food for our restaurant from fresh ingredients for each individual order. We are very proud of the quality of our food. We grow all our own fresh fruit and vegetables from our garden in the hills of Mzuzu and grow all our own herbs in our gardens. We have an extensive and exciting menu with dishes from all over the world and on any given day you will find great lunch specials and evening meals which make the most of the seasonal produce. Our menu has vegan and gluten free options.

This husband and wife team are the owners of a boutique backpacker lodge on the lakeshore of northern Malawi, in the port town of Nkhata Bay.

They have built up the Lodge from scratch over the last 20 years. It now has an international reputation, attracting guests from all over the world, with a large number of repeat guests and also a loyal following of in-country clientele.
