Homer is a city in Kenai Penisula Borough in the US state of Alaska. It is 218 miles southwest of Anchorage. According to the 2010 Census, the population is 5,003, up from 3,946 in 2000. Long known as The "Halibut Fishing Capital of the World." Homer is also nicknamed "the end of the road," and more recently, "the cosmic hamlet by the sea."
Geography
Homer is located at 59°38'35" North, 151°31'33" West (59.643059, −151.525900). The only road into Homer is the Sterling Highway.
Homer is on the shore of Kachemak Bay on the southwest side of the Kenai Peninsula. Its distinguishing feature is the Homer Spit, a narrow 4.5 mi (7.2 km) long gravel bar that extends into the bay, on which is located the Homer Harbor.
Much of the coastline, as well as the Homer Spit, sank dramatically during the Good Friday earthquake in March 1964. After the earthquake, very little vegetation was able to survive on the Homer Spit.
The town has a total area of 25.5 square miles (66 km2), of which 15 square miles (39 km2) is land and 10.5 square miles (27 km2) is water.
Climate
As with much of South Central Alaska, Homer has a moderate subarctic coastal climate which causes its weather to be moderate compared to interior Alaska. Winters are snowy and long but not particularly cold, considering the latitude, with the average January high only slightly below freezing. Snow averages 50 inches (127 cm) per season, falling primarily from November through March, with some accumulation in October and April, and rarely in May. Homer receives only about 25 inches of rainfall annually due to the influence of the Chugach Mountains to the southeast which shelter it from the Gulf of Alaska. There are 7 days with a minimum 0 °F (−18 °C) or below annually, and Homer falls in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6a. Summers are cool due to the marine influence, with 75 °F (24 °C) maxima or minima remaining at or above 55 °F (13 °C) being extremely rare. Extreme temperatures have ranged from −24 °F (−31 °C) on January 28–29, 1989 up to 81 °F (27 °C) on July 10, 1993.

Hiking in Homer
There are eleven trails in and around the Homer area ranging from hikes downhill to the beach with a steep return, trails that loop through grassy fields, flat terrain through woods and meadows with a viewing platform, and guided tours with a naturalist at the Wynn Nature Center.
There is something for every level of hiker.
Kachemak Bay State Park Trails
There are more than a dozen trails spanning 80 miles across the bay in the Kachemak Bay State Park.
Our personal favorite is the Glacier Lake Trail, an easy 3.3-mile hike to Grewingk Glacier Lake. The hike takes approximately 1-2 hours to get the lake and about 1 hour from the lake to the pickup point. The hike can also be made into a full day by exploring additional trails.
Enjoy spectacular views of the lake and glacier. You can also see and hear the ice calving off the glacier. Return via the Saddle Trail, a one-mile switchback through forested terrain.
The trails in Kachemak Bay State Park include opportunities for fishing, berry picking, and wildlife viewing. You might see puffins, sea otters, dolphins, whales, and sea lions.
Kachemak Bay is home to many unique and beautiful sea birds. Birding tours are available. Be sure to bring your camera!
A water taxi from the Homer Spit is available to take you across the bay and drop you off and pick you up at a designated time of your choice.
Bear Viewing
Bear Viewing has become increasingly more popular in Homer due to the proximity to the bears from Homer and the diverse choice of transportation to see the bears. You can go by helicopter, floatplane, wheeled plane or onboard a boat.
The best time to see the bears is late May until late fall. They actively feed on grasses in the spring, clams, and salmon in the summer, and berries and seeds in the fall, all to fatten up before winter hibernation. Food is so abundant, my experience is they mostly ignore you while bear viewing!
Some of the most popular locations are the Katmai National Park and Lake Clark National Preserve, and Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park. You can witness bears in their national habitat and get some amazing photos.
Be sure to inquire about the proximity to the bears once you get there, as the access can be quite varied. For instance, the helicopter will drop you right where the bears are located and there is not much walking, and some trips require minimum walking and others a lot of walking to get to the bears.
