Texas

Texas is a state in the South Central Region of the United States. It is the second-largest U.S. state by area (after Alaska) and population (after California). Texas shares borders with the states of Louisiana to the east, Arkansas to the northeast, Oklahoma to the north, New Mexico to the west, and the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas to the southwest, and has a coastline with the Gulf of Mexico to the southeast.

Houston is the most populous city in Texas and the fourth largest in the U.S., while San Antonio is the second-most populous in the state and seventh largest in the U.S. Dallas-Fort Worth and Greater Houston are the fourth and fifth largest metropolitan statistical areas in the country, respectively. Other major cities include Austin, the second-most populous state capital in the U.S., and El Paso. Texas is nicknamed the "Lone Star State" for its former status as an independent republic, and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The "Lone Star" can be found on the Texas state flag and on the Texas state seal. The origin of Texas's name is from the word taysha, which means "friends" in the Caddo language.

Due to its size and geologic features such as the Balcones Fault, Texas contains diverse landscapes common to both the U.S. Southern and the Southwestern regions. Although Texas is popularly associated with the U.S. southwestern deserts, less than ten percent of Texas's land area is desert. Most of the population centers are in areas of former prairies, grasslands, forests, and the coastline. Traveling from east to west, one can observe terrain that ranges from coastal swamps and piney woods, to rolling plains and rugged hills, and finally the desert and mountains of the Big Bend.

The term "six flags over Texas", refers to several nations that have ruled over the territory. Spain was the first European country to claim and control the area of Texas. France held a short-lived colony. Mexico controlled the territory until 1836 when Texas won its independence, becoming an independent Republic. In 1845, Texas joined the union as the 28th state. The state's annexation set off a chain of events that led to the Mexican-American War in 1846. A slave state before the American Civil War, Texas declared its secession from the U.S. in early 1861 and officially joined the Confederate States of America on March 2 of the same year. After the Civil War and the restoration of its representation in the federal government, Texas entered a long period of economic stagnation.

Historically four major industries shaped the Texas economy prior to World War II: cattle and bison, cotton, timber, and oil. Before and after the U.S. Civil War the cattle industry, which Texas came to dominate, was a major economic driver for the state, thus creating the traditional image of the Texas cowboy. In the later 19th century cotton and lumber grew to be major industries as the cattle industry became less lucrative. It was ultimately, though, the discovery of major petroleum deposits (Spindletop in particular) that initiated an economic boom which became the driving force behind the economy for much of the 20th century. With strong investments in universities, Texas developed a diversified economy and high tech industry in the mid-20th century. As of 2015, it is second on the list of the most Fortune 500 companies with 54. With a growing base of industry, the state leads in many industries, including tourism, agriculture, petrochemicals, energy, computers and electronics, aerospace, and biomedical sciences. Texas has led the U.S. in state export revenue since 2002 and has the second-highest gross state product. If Texas were a sovereign state, it would be the 10th largest economy in the world.

About Us

Our Manor is a Fredericksburg TX bed and breakfast, and a AAA Four Diamond/Select Registry/Diamond Collection inn. We are located on 38 acres high on top of a hill in the middle of the Texas hill countries near Fredericksburg, TX. There are 18 different accommodations available – 4 in the main building, 2 individual cottages, 4 ultra suites, and 8 cottage suites.

Your stay at this Fredericksburg TX bed and breakfast will include a full, 3-course breakfast, our famous chocolate chip cookies, and access to the refreshment area for tea and sodas. Breakfast is either served in the main dining room, on the front porch, or sent to your room as a continental breakfast basket. Room service for breakfast is available for an additional fee.

Our accommodations are spacious and all have full, private baths within the room. Many have private decks or indoor sun-porches, or a beautiful view across the valley.

Starting from nothing

This now gorgeous property began as nothing but brush and overgrown wilderness. In 1991, the owners moved out from the city and began construction of the main house. What began as simply a residence became a Frederickburg TX bed and breakfast in 1999. When their Manor opened, there was just a single room in the upstairs of the Main House.

Now, after 20 years, Robert and Patricia’s vision is still going strong, and has expanded to 18 beautiful rooms.

But sometimes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. After all this time, Rose Hill is just as peaceful, the view across the Pedernales River Valley is just as beautiful, and the Vanderlyn’s hospitality is just as warm.

Why do our guests return again and again to our Manor?

Our Manor provides a peaceful and quiet escape from the world – a place to stop, rewind, and rediscover yourself.

Our convenient location is sufficiently out in the middle of nowhere to provide the peace and quiet that you desire. However, it’s still centrally located with easy access to many local attractions.

Shopping in Fredericksburg, touring the more than 50 wineries in short distance, restaurants, parks, museums, art galleries – all are only minutes away.

Main House Suites

The main building includes the common areas of the inn - dining room, bar, game room, tv room and there are 4 suites on the second floor. There is no elevator. Each of those has their own bath in the suite and a sitting room. The Sunrise and Sunset Suites also have access to the veranda on the front of the main building. Sunrise, Sunset, and Green have king beds. Lavender has a queen bed. There are daybeds for a 3rd person in Sunrise, Lavender and Green. The suites in the main building are very popular, especially Sunrise and Sunset.

Magnolia Hall Ultra Suites

Magnolia Hall is our newest building with four very upscale accommodations inspired by some of the ideas that Joanna Gaines incorporates into her interior designs, including shiplap bathrooms, farmhouse sinks, and rustic farmhouse kitchen shelves. Each accommodation includes a huge bathroom with both a jacuzzi tub and another tub and shower, a large bedroom with a king-size bed, work area, and large closet, a full kitchen, living area, and another half bath. Star Magnolia and Sweet Bay Magnolia also have a wonderful deck in the front with a great view.

The herb garden cottage suites are very private and have big, panoramic views of the countryside, both from inside and from the decks.

Carriage House Suites

The Carriage House is behind the main building and has two suites – one on the top floor and one on the bottom floor. They are completely separate, with separate entrances. These are very large suites and the only ones on the property with jacuzzi tubs.

Individual Cottages

These are small, individual cottages, with decks in the front with great views. These are extremely private and quiet.

This suite is not the only thing that is Texas-sized at our Fredericksburg bed and breakfast. This is what a reviewer for the San Antonio Express News experienced as they approached the inn: “After twisting and turning for a mile or more, you come to a clearing where stands a sign announcing the inn. But you’re unlikely to notice the manor itself until you’ve turned up the long driveway. Once you do, you’ll be hard-pressed to keep your eyes on the road. Everything about the place is vast, in an unbelievable, Texas-sized way, from the sweep of the fields that stretch before the two-story building to the size of the veranda that practically invites you to pull up a chair and relax.”
