Kaapsehoop is a pretty little village, situated 25km southwest of Nelspruit on a buttress of the Mpumalanga escarpment. It is a protected area that has a wide array of endangered bird species including the extremely rare Blue Swallow.  They breed on what is called 'Blue Swallow Plain', a natural heritage site just outside the village.

Kaapsehoop is also known for its approximately 200 wild horses, the only wild herds in South Africa. They range in size from bachelor herds of around 3, to larger more structured herds of 15 to 20 horses. It is believed that they are remnants of British troops stationed here during the South African War, but the acceptable theory is that they were left to the wild when the Kaapsehoop police station was shut down many years ago, to make way for motorised transport. In addition, Kaapsehoop Horse Trails offer riding on their own horses.

Lowveld Botanical Gardens - distance 20km

You can explore these magnificent gardens on several hiking trails and view the extensive indigenous tree collection, one of the largest collections of cycads, the African Rainforest and two waterfalls. Daytime tours take the visitor on a winding path through fields and bush, to a village where a Shangaan family lives. The guide explains their fascinating way of life, before moving on to the Sangoma's Kraal for a lesson in traditional medicines. Midday tours enable visitors to share a meal with the Shangaan family in the village. During the evening festival, the history of the Shangaans is presented by a huge cast of choristers and dancers before dinner is served inside the huts. Prior bookings for lunch and the evening festival is essential.

Sudwala Caves and Dinosaur Park - distance 45km

The series of caverns called the Sudwala Caves are one of South Africa's major attractions. The caves are believed to be about 2 000 million years old and contain not only stalagmites and stalactites, but also the fossilised remains of primitive early life forms known as 'collenia'.

The Dinosaur Park at the Sudwala Caves is set in a lush tropical garden. It contains life-sized, scientifically accurate models of pre-historic animals. The Park tells the story of the development of life on earth. Its models are as diverse as the ancient amphibious and mammal-like reptiles, dinosaurs, extinct mammals and pre-historic man.

White River City

After the Boer War, the British demarcated land on the Emanzimhlope River, a tributary of the Crocodile River. Emanzimhlope translates from the Swazi as 'White Waters'.

Lord Milner (administrator of the defeated Transvaal) tasked his attache, Tom Lawrence, to demarcate land on the 'Emanzimhlope' – a tributary of the Crocodile River – to demobilised British Anglo-Boer War soldiers. The longest street in town is still named after Lawrence, who was the first manager of the new settlement.

The farming tradition of the community that settled here after the Anglo-Boer War has remained virtually unchanged to this day. After a 26 km canal to channel water from the river was built, the new settlers planted fruit trees and established new cultivation methods.

White River (Ward 30) is governed by the Democratic Alliance, South Africa’s official opposition party.

The DA is the majority party in the town. Rowan Torr was placed as councillor after a by-election on the 7 August 2019, where he succeeded Trudie Grove Morgan as a councillor.

Agriculture involves largely the production of tropical fruits, vegetables, flowers and timber and tobacco, and is one of the most fertile in the province.

White River, with three irrigation dams and a number of nearby forests, is a popular holiday destination for those looking to visit the Crocodile River Valley, and the town has a reputation for its arts and crafts. One of the attractions for the art scene is Casterbridge Lifestyle Center situated on the outskirts of the city. Once a mango plantation it now sports a cinema, art exhibitions in its various art galleries, theater plays, concerts, a vintage motor museum and various restaurants. Within the town is the Hoerskool Rob Ferreira High School with the private Uplands Pre-prep, Preparatory and College (High School) located a few kilometers from the town centre.

White River lies 20 km north of Mbombela not far from the border with Kruger National Park. White River has a population of 16,639 and is located in an area of considerable scenic beauty. Compared to other parts of South Africa, the climate is neither excessively hot in summer when rainfall is at its highest, nor overly cold during the sunny winters. The farms tend to be relatively small but agriculture is intensive with tropical and citrus fruits in abundance, and vegetables and cut flowers readily available.
