Sights
Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the largest administrative region in France, spanning the west and southwest of the mainland. The region was created by the territorial reform of French regions in 2014 through the merger of three regions: Aquitaine, Limousin and Poitou-Charentes. It covers 84,036 km2 (32,446 sq mi) – or 1⁄8 of the country – and has 5,956,978 inhabitants (municipal population on 1 January 2017). The new region was established on 1 January 2016, following the regional elections in December 2015.
It is the largest region in France by area (including overseas regions such as French Guiana), with a territory slightly larger than that of Austria. Its prefecture and largest city, Bordeaux, together with its suburbs and satellite cities, forms the seventh-largest metropolitan area of France, with 850,000 inhabitants. The region has 25 major urban areas, among which the most important after Bordeaux are Bayonne (288,000 inhabitants), Limoges (283,000), Poitiers (255,000), Pau (241,000) and La Rochelle (206,000), as well as eleven major clusters. The growth of its population, particularly marked on the coast, makes this one of the most attractive areas economically in France; the new region outperforms Île-de-France and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in demographic dynamism.
After Île-de-France, New Aquitaine is the premier French region in research and innovation, with five universities (Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Limoges, Poitiers and Pau) and several Grandes Écoles. The agricultural region of Europe with the greatest turnover, it is the French region with the most tourism jobs, as it has three of the four historic resorts on the French Atlantic coast: Arcachon, Biarritz and Royan, as well as several ski resorts (most notably Gourette). It is the fifth French region for business creation (all sectors).
Its economy is based on agriculture and viticulture (vineyards of Bordeaux and Cognac), tourism, a powerful aerospace industry, digital economy and design, parachemical and pharmaceutical industries, financial sector (Niort is the fourth-largest financial center in the nation, specialising in mutual insurance companies) and industrial ceramics (Limoges). The new region includes major parts of Southern France ("Midi de la France"), marked by Basque, Occitan, Poitevin and Saintongeais cultures. Historically, it is the "indirect successor" to medieval Aquitaine; it extends over a large part of the former Duchy of Eleanor of Aquitaine.
Toponymy
The region's interim name Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes was a hyphenated placename, known as ALPC, created by hyphenating the merged regions' names – Aquitaine, Limousin and Poitou-Charentes – in alphabetical order.
In June 2016, a working group headed by historian Anne-Marie Cocula , a former vice-president of Aquitaine, proposed the name "Nouvelle Aquitaine".The decision came after the popular favourite, "Aquitaine", faced resistance by regional politicians from Limousin and Poitou-Charentes. The other popular favourite, "Grande Aquitaine", was rejected for its connotation with a feeling of superiority. Alain Rousset, president of the region, concurred with the working group's conclusion, reaffirming that he considered the acronym "ALPC" no choice at all. For those deploring the loss of "Limousin" and "Poitou-Charentes", he noted that the predecessor region of Aquitaine subsumed the identities of the Périgord or the Pays Basque, which did not disappear during its 40 years of operation.
On 27 June 2016, just a few days ahead of 1 July deadline, the Regional Council almost unanimously adopted Nouvelle-Aquitaine as the region's permanent name. France's Conseil d'État approved Nouvelle-Aquitaine as the new name of the region on 28 September 2016, effective two days later.

Culinary
The Guest Table
You join the owners with the other guests
The boutique hotel does not have a restaurant. It is therefore not possible to reserve a "table for two".
Nevertheless, you can enjoy an atmospheric culinary daily dinner at the 'table d'hôtes' prepared with great care.
Children
Our table d'hôtes is geared towards children and adults (parents and people traveling without children). How?
Children do not like to sit at the table for a long time and like to eat early in the evening, while the parents often prefer to dine a little longer: for them it is also a holiday. That is why we serve the joint children's meal around 6.30 pm. The adults sit down at the table around 8:00 PM.
Colourful Evening
In July and August we organize a colourful evening every Thursday evening. It is a pleasant family evening with a take-away (adults + children together) with Limousin burgers, fries, a healthy salad and a delicious dessert in the party barn.
Anyone staying at the abbey can join us for dinner and/or use the stage.
We cordially invite everyone to bring something nice to the stage this evening. A skit, a dance act, a play, a song, a piece of music, a poem, a quiz, well, anything that's fun to watch/listen to.
Our View of Cooking
"Everything fresh and as much regional and seasonal as possible. High taste, original, fair and varied".
That is our view on cooking in a few words.
Buying good products is the basis. That sounds simple, but can be tricky with a shopping list in hand. That is why we do not have a fixed menu, but we determine our menu of fresh ingredients per day. And in the high season, our regular suppliers anticipate our demand.
Vegetable Garden, Herbs Garden
The 'potager' and the 'jardin aromatique' are the domain of one of the owners. Every spring, the plots of the vegetable garden are prepared for sowing/planting special varieties. Right next to the kitchen is the herb garden full of aromatic plants. The many fruit trees (including apple, quince, cherry, quetsch, currant, walnut) and berry bushes (including raspberry, blueberry, gooseberry, red currant, kiwi) are pruned where necessary in winter.
Cooking Holidays
"Cooking with the owners and a good glass of wine".
We like to share our passion with others. It regularly happens that guests spontaneously come to help with cooking in our kitchen. Would you also like to cook with us for an evening? Which can!
Or do you want to participate in a cooking 6-day? That is also possible! See the arrangements below. You can also follow a tailor-made cooking program with your own group. Call or email us.
Several times a year we organize a 'cooking holiday'. For a week we take you to local markets and small-scale 'producers' and 'élevages' of poultry, bison, cattle (Limousin), free-range pigs, saffron, cheese, aromatic and medicinal herbs, etc. Here we also buy our products. for the cooking clinics.
The cooking clinics are organized in our kitchen under the inspiring leadership of the owners. In addition, we invite external specialists for, for example, a half-day in nature to look for mushrooms, a morning collecting wild herbs and plants or for a workshop 'working with chocolate', depending on the season and availability.
Much attention is paid to product knowledge, basic preparation of sauces, filleting, deboning, binding of fish, poultry and meat, timing, working method and seasoning. You will also learn many 'tips & tricks' about separating, binding, blowing and burning. We cook 'modern', but with a classical background and with respect for the traditional methods of preparation, and using 'produits du terroir' from the immediate vicinity as much as possible.
Things to do
Here at our boutique hotel, there is always something to do.
A selection of what we have to offer at our small-scale holiday domain is listed below.
The Area
Offers more than you think
The Creuse department is one of the least populated areas of France. The silence and the beautiful, untouched nature are the most important 'unique selling points'.
Nevertheless, the region offers many attractions, sights and animations. For adults, but certainly also for children. We have listed a few for you. All at a distance of 2 minutes on foot to a maximum of 45 minutes by car from the hotel.
For more information such as opening times and rates, please click through to the relevant website.
Velorail
You can rent bicycle lorries on an old railway line near Bourganeuf (max. 4 or 5 people per lorry). Due to logistics, departures can only take place at set times.
Villemonteix
Tough castle from the 15th century near Chenerailles. Beautifully furnished with antique furniture and many (wall) tapestries from Aubusson. Guided tours from April - November.
Tour Zizim
The Turkish prince 'Zizim' lived in exile in this medieval tower in Bourganeuf. The tower can be visited from the inside and in the summer.
Scenovision
Beautiful bad-weather attraction: an audio-visual spectacle that takes place in different rooms and sets. Depicted is a romanticized story about a distillery in Bénevent. The Beneventine liqueur is produced again and can be tasted there.
Marche Bourganeuf
Every Wednesday there is a market in Bourganeuf. Lots of vegetables, bread, meat and fish, but also French aprons and caps.
Museum Tapestry
'Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie': new National Museum in Aubusson about the famous tapestry industry.
Golf de la Porcelaine
A beautiful 18-hole course that all our guests return with enthusiastic stories. Slope 135 and lots of elevation changes. Good for the condition.
Pony Rental
You can rent ponies from the neighbors who also have a bison breeding farm. You can also take (under supervision) outdoor rides.
Maison du Tapissier
This is not the carpet museum where the -mainly modern- Aubusson carpets are exhibited. Here is a demonstration of how these world famous carpets are manufactured.
Masgot
Picturesque village where the sculptor François Michaud left his mark 200 years ago. Now it is home to the sculpture school which hosts sculpture workshops at our hotel during the summer months. Nice auberge for lunch.
Labyrinth Geant
Huge labyrinth where you have to find the right way to the exit on the basis of a questionnaire by subject, for example sports or history.
Wolf Park
Educational park 'les Loups de Chabrière' about the wolf and its habitat. Beautifully laid out.
Arbre and arbre
Survival in the treetops. Climbing park where you can abseil and zipline high along the treetops. Different courses; From 4 years.
Lac de Vassiviere
A beautiful lake with an area of more than 1000 ha. equipped with walking and cycling paths, swimming beaches, water sports facilities, cruises, museum and sculpture garden....
Sporty
Cycling, Racing, Mountain Biking
The (wide) surroundings of our hotel are dotted with single-track mountain bike trails.
About 2300 km of marked itineraries are available.
For those who prefer to cycle on the road: the roads are well maintained and there is little traffic. There are no mountain cols, but nothing is flat, so you can still make quite a few altimeters.
Hiking
Routes of 5,10,15,20 or more kilometres.
The Creuse, the green heart of France with its hilly landscape, is a true paradise for every walker.
More than 2,500 km of routes have been set out. Difficult long-distance walks for the real 'pros' and of course also smaller day trips with fewer altimeters.
Golf
Golf on the always quiet greens of the Limousin
Easily accessible (from the hotel):
History of our hotel
12th century Cistercian abbey
It was founded under Bernard of Clairvaux in the early 12th century.
Only mysterious ruins remain of the original buildings from that time. However, much can be traced back thanks to the strict Cistercian architecture. The location of the buildings in relation to the central cloister square is identical in almost all abbeys.
At the end of the 18th century, the main building with the chapter house and Dortoir above, destroyed in the French Revolution, was rebuilt. It is in this building where the chambres d'hôtes are now housed.
Our hotel is a bustling chambre d'hôtes in a lovely, calm department of France.
On the 5.5 ha domain you will find peace and space in the wooded park or the library in the main building on the one hand. On the other hand, there is the commotion around the swimming pool with many children during the school holidays and the conviviality during dinner at the table d'hôtes.
