The Ecology
The Eastern Cape is an ecologically rich region with a varied landscape that ranges from the rugged coastline of the Indian Ocean to the lush valleys of the Amatola Mountains.
This region is home to seven of South Africa’s nine biomes, meaning there is an incredible diversity of plant and animal life to discover.
The majestic Southern Right Whale can be seen during their annual migration and breeding between July and November.
Beaches
One of the most striking features of the Eastern Cape is its coastline, which includes around 800km of pristine, untouched beaches.
The beaches in this region are an extension of the Alexandra Dunes landscape, the second giant coastal dune in the world.
The desert forests are a vital feature of the region’s ecology, as they provide a home for several unique sub-tropical plant species.
Game Reserves
The Eastern Cape is also home to diverse animal species, including the Big Five (lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalos), which can be found in the region’s private game reserves.
The Addo Elephant National Park, located just outside Port Elizabeth, is one of the most popular destinations for wildlife enthusiasts. This park is home to a large elephant population and many other animals, such as hyenas, zebras, and giraffes.
River Mouths
The Eastern Cape landscape has magnificent river mouths, such as the Keiskamma, Great Fish, Mtati, and the Mqwalana, forming coastal lagoons.
These river mouths are essential breeding grounds for various fish species and are home to several bird species, such as the African Fish Eagle, Knysna Loerie, and the Hornbill.
Pineapple Area
The Eastern Cape is also a central agricultural region, with pineapple being one of its most important crops.
Visitors to the area can also sample a variety of fresh organic produce, including vegetables and fruits, and honeybush tea, made from an indigenous plant species of the region.
